September 17 to commemorate days for Citizenship and Constitution

Commemorate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day Sept 17

To educate pupils about the Constitution of the United States, schools across the country taught and recognized the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the document. Fox News reports that public educational facilities at a variety of levels (from elementary education to university) are granted federal funds in order to supplement these educational programs. Sept. 17 was formally named “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day” in 2004, as the result of a law championed by the late West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd.

Earlier roots of Constitution Day

In 1940, Congress worked with President Franklin Roosevelt to start “I Am an American Day.” This day was meant to celebrate those who had received United States of America citizenship and was recognized on the third Sunday of May. The date was moved to September 17 and renamed “Citizenship Day” by Congress in 1952. By the time Byrd’s law passed in 2004, federal agencies were obligated to instruct employees regarding the nature of the Constitution and schools that receive federal funds were obligated to provide Constitution-based education to students on Sept. 17.

Celebrating the time of the Constitution

University and federal locaters have numerous seminars from coast to coast. On Constitution Day, Americans will participate in speeches, presentations, films, parties and panel discussions. “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart is publicizing his rally – which really doesn’t occur until October – however its focus on reason seems appropriate on Constitution Day. 9/11 is something to be talked about.

Constitution Week celebrated by President Obama

Constitution Week, September 17 via September 23, is a time that Barack Obama hopes citizens will acknowledge the rights we have. ”I encourage federal, state, and local officials, also as leaders of civic, social, and organizations, to conduct ceremonies and courses that acknowledge our Constitution and reaffirm our rights and obligations as citizens of this great Nation,” is what President Obama said during the conference.
